Local and Family History
The National Library of Wales is located in Aberystwyth, where it is possible for amateur and professional genealogists to research family histories. The library holds some of the country's greatest treasures, including the oldest manuscript in the Welsh language, the 12th century Black Book of Carmarthen. Special one-day reader tickets can be obtained at the site.
Family historians and those interested in local history should visit Ceredigion Archives, the county record office, located at Marine Terrace, Aberystwyth, open Monday-Friday, 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm. Among the wealth of the fascinating research material available the archive has now obtained for viewing the 1901 census for the county of Cardiganshire.
A visit to Ceredigion Museum, also based at Aberystwyth, will be a must for all those wishing to see fascinating displays of domestic life of an earlier age, as well as the seafaring, agriculture and mining industry exhibits.
Mining of copper and lead held in the rocks of the Plynlimon Range has a history traced back to 1800BC. The lead for Strata Florida Abbey was mined and smelted in nearby Cwmystwyth.
The history of mining in Ceredigion has been preserved at the Mining Museum at the Mining Museum at Llywernog, Ponterwyd.
