The National Library of Wales, located in Aberystwyth, holds many interesting art and historic exhibitions and is well worth a visit –along with the art centre, for craft fairs, theatre and various exhibitions. In the National library it is possible for amateur and professional genealogists to research family histories. The library holds some of the country’s greatest treasures including the oldest manuscript in the Welsh language, the 12th century Black Book of Carmarthen.
Family historians and those interested in local history should visit Ceredigion Archives, the county record office, located at Marine Terrace, Aberystwyth, (Mon to Fri). Among the wealth of the fascinating research material available the archive has now obtained for viewing the 1901 census for the county of Cardiganshire.
There is also the Ceredigion museum in Aberystwyth with displays of domestic life of an earlier age, as well as the seafaring, agriculture and mining industry exhibits.
Mining of copper and lead held in the rocks of the Plynlimon range has a history traced back to 1800bc. The lead for Strata Florida Abbey was mined and smelted in nearby Cymystwyth, and the desolate remains can be seen today. Remains of mines can also be seen near Pontrhydygroes.
The history of mining in Ceredigion has been preserved at the Mining Museum at Llywernog, Ponterwyd, where there are tours of the silver and lead mines.
